Final homestand

The final homestand of the season is upon us, as the Z’s begin a season-ending string of nine games tonight with the opener of a five-game set against the Omaha Storm Chasers. The race is over for New Orleans, who lost in Round Rock last night, then saw the Express clinch the division title approximately a half-hour later when Albuquerque fell to Memphis. The Z’s can still play spoilers, however, as the race is heating up for Omaha, who leads their division by four games over Memphis entering tonight.

Logan Morrison has been recalled by Florida, but the Zephyrs are making up for it by getting another big bat in the lineup with the return of third baseman Matt Dominguez, who had missed the last two weeks with a hamstring injury. Dominguez was off to a hot start in August before the injury, batting .378 with 10 RBI in 10 games.

Tonight’s lineup:

  1. CF Coghlan
  2. 2B Thurston
  3. DH Rottino
  4. 1B Cervenak
  5. 3B Dominguez
  6. RF Romero
  7. SS Martinez
  8. C Davis
  9. LF Padilla

Coghlan optioned to NOLA

Chris Coghlan, the former Zephyr and 2009 National League Rookie of the Year who has spent much of this season on the disabled list, was activated from the DL today by the Marlins and optioned to New Orleans. Coghlan has been battling knee problems this season, and hit .343 during a 10-game rehab assignment with Class A Jupiter. He is expected to join the Zephyrs in Round Rock over the weekend.

The Z’s wrap up the homestand tonight against Colorado Springs, looking to win back-to-back series for the first time since mid-May. Logan Morrison is back in the lineup after missing last night’s game due to a groin injury.

  1. CF Padilla
  2. 2B Vazquez
  3. LF Morrison
  4. 1B Cervenak
  5. C Rottino
  6. RF Romero
  7. 3B Torres

Tonight’s scheduled starting pitcher, Sean West, was placed on the disabled list this afternoon with left elbow impingement syndrome. Pete Andrelczyk will make the spot start for the Zephyrs – Drelz Nation has posted a 1.73 ERA in 15 games, including four outings of at least three innings.

August already?

The season enters the home stretch, and the Zephyrs can claw back to the .500 mark for the first time since June 24th with a victory tonight. 10 games back of first-place Round Rock with 35 games to play makes it a steep climb, but stranger things have happened.

  1. LF Padilla
  2. 2B Thurston
  3. 1B Cervenak
  4. RF Aguila
  5. 3B Dominguez
  6. CF Torres
