Badenhop hops to Majors

The New Orleans Zephyrs have promoted reliever Burke Badenhop to the Florida Marlins. He was 1-1, with a 6.75 ERA in 11 games with the Zephyrs. He will replace Clay Hensley on the active roster. Hensley was placed on the 15 day disabled list.
Badenhop is the third Zephyr this season to get called up from New Orleans.

The Zephyrs have added reliever Garrett Parcell from Class AA Jacksonville. Parcell made three relief appearances for the Suns, allowing only one run on seven hits while striking out four batters. He was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA.

The Zephyrs have won four in a row and continue the series in Iowa tonight at 7PM.

Z’s head to Iowa

Late night last night with the Zephyrs winning in 11 innings. Early day today with a 6:30 AM flight to Dallas, connect to Des Moines and arrive in the capital city at noon. Most of the personal luggage didn’t make it. A typical travel day in the PCL.

The Z’s open a four game set with Iowa tonight. NOLA is trying to make it four wins in a row.

Happy Cinco de MAYO!

Cinco de Mayo – extra mayo! – at Zephyr Field.  Fans received $5 admission to Thursday’s game if they brought mayonnaise to the ticket windows, and we got a wide range of responses. Entire jars, packets (at least one had already been used), and even printouts of pictures of mayonnaise. However they got into the ballpark, they were treated to a thrilling extra-inning win over the Memphis Redbirds, polishing off a 6-2 homestand!

A chill in the air

A cold front moved through the New Orleans area early this morning, and temperatures are expected to dip to record lows overnight tonight, giving us a rarity at Zephyr Field in May: a chance to bundle up. If the game time temp drops into the 50s, it will be the first time that has happened at Zephyr Field since April 30, 2005, when it was 59 degrees when the Z’s and Albuquerque squared off.

The lineup:

  1. LF Rottino
  2. 2B Thurston
  3. 3B Gotay
  4. 1B Salazar
  5. RF Aguila
  6. CF Kroeger
  7. C Davis
  8. SS Merchan
  9. P Villanueva

Petey gets the call

Bryan Petersen has been promoted to the Marlins, following a torrid streak at the plate which saw him collect 13 hits in 26 at-bats over his last seven games, including a 4-for-4 game in Albuquerque last week where he had three doubles and a three-run homer. Petersen is taking the roster spot of Donnie Murphy, who has been battling soreness in his right wrist, the same wrist he had surgery on last fall.

Tonight’s lineup as the Z’s welcome the Memphis Redbirds to town:

  1. 3B Cervenak
  2. 2B Thurston
  3. 1B Gotay
  4. LF Salazar
  5. RF Kroeger
  6. C Davis
  7. CF Mathews
  8. SS Merchan
  9. P Mendez

Going for three in a row

After playing before a packed house of 10,975 in a dramatic 1-0 win on Friday night, the Z’s did it again last night, getting a pinch homer from Aaron Mathews in the eighth inning to beat the RedHawks 5-4. It was the first pinch-hit home run by a Zephyr at Zephyr Field since Michel Abreu on August 17, 2008.

The Z’s look for three in a row and a series win this afternoon, with more beautiful weather on tap:

  1. 1B Cervenak
  2. 2B Thurston
  3. 3B Gotay
  4. RF Aguila
  5. LF Kroeger
  6. C Davis
  7. CF Mathews
  8. SS Klosterman
