Dominguez and Baker join Z’s
The New Orleans Zephyrs return to action tonight as they travel to California as they take on the Fresno Grizzlies for a four-game series. Despite a 38-28 all-time record against Fresno, the Z’s have lost 11 of 16 against Fresno since 2007, including seven of eight meetings at Chukshansi Park. The Zephyrs have not won a series in Fresno since sweeping a four-game set, May 7-10, 2002.
Matt Dominguez, the Florida Marlins top-ranked prospect, has been added to the Zephyrs from Class AA Jacksonville. Dominguez was scheduled to start the year with New Orleans, but suffered a fractured elbow when he was hit by a pitch late in Spring Training. The third baseman was 3×18 (.167) in four rehab games with Class A Jupiter and 2×15 (.133) in four games with Jacksonville before joining the Z’s. Dominguez takes the roster spot of catcher Gregg Glime, who was transferred to Class A Jamestown.
Catcher John Baker, who one year ago last Sunday went on the Marlins’ disabled list with a strained flexor muscle in his right forearm, has joined the Zephyrs on a rehabilitation assignment. Baker eventually underwent Tommy John surgery on September 3rd, and was 1×16 in seven rehab games with Jupiter and Jacksonville last week. The Alameda, California native is returning to his home state, where he starred at the University of California. Baker is the first player on rehab assignment to join the Zephyrs since pitcher Renyel Pinto in June 2009.
