Non-roster invitees announced

The Marlins have announced the signings of six more non-roster invitees, in addition to Ruben Gotay, who signed last week.

Infielder Tim Torres has been part of consecutive Southern League championships at Class AA Jacksonville, where he batted .275 in 109 games last season. He also hit .265 in 14 games with the Zephyrs.

First baseman/outfielder Josh Kroeger spent each of the last two years with the White Sox Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte. He has played at Triple-A for most of the last six seasons, averaging 16 home runs per year since 2008. Kroeger’s big league experience consists of a 22-game stint with Arizona in 2004.

Chris Lubanski is another outfielder with a wealth of Triple-A experience, having spent three seasons with Omaha before batting .293 with 17 home runs for Las Vegas in 2010. He was Kansas City’s top draft pick in 2003, but has yet to reach the Majors.

Right-handed reliever Frank Mata made his big league debut with Baltimore in 2010, compiling a 7.79 ERA in 15 games after going 5-3 with eight saves and a 3.16 ERA in 35 games for Class AAA Norfolk. Mata pitched in Minnesota’s organization for the previous seven seasons.

Left-hander Darin Downs reached Triple-A for the first time in his eight-year pro career in 2010, going 6-2 with a 4.46 ERA in 23 games with Durham. Downs recorded a 12-4 record and 2.00 ERA in 20 games (19 starts) with Class A Charlotte in 2009, earning team MVP honors.

Lefty Victor Garate split his 2010 season between Class AA Harrisburg and Class AAA Syracuse in the Washington Nationals organization, finding success at Double-A (0.87 ERA in 17 games), but struggling at Triple-A (4.91 ERA in 23 games).
