Edwin to the Marlins

Congratulations to Edwin Rodriguez, who has been named interim manager of the Florida Marlins. This is the second time in three years that a Zephyrs manager has been promoted to the big leagues midseason; in 2008, Ken Oberkfell was summoned by the New York Mets after the dismissal of Willie Randolph.

Padres Day in Memphis

One, two….three?

Tonight, the Zephyrs are making a fourth attempt at stringing together three consecutive home victories. Reno and Sacramento are the only other teams without three straight home wins this season. Brian Lawrence seems to be the ideal pitcher to have on the mound in the quest for three in a row; Lawrence has a 2.35 ERA in seven games (six starts) at Zephyr Field this season.

Hector Luna has been ill the last few days, keeping him out of the lineup. He’s still under the weather, and will miss a third straight game.

Mister Mastny

The Zephyrs have added another new player, Tom Mastny, a right-hander who signed a minor league deal with the Marlins after beginning the year with the independent Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League. Mastny, who pitched in 80 games over three seasons with the Cleveland Indians from 2006-08, was 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA with Somerset.

Mastny looks to help New Orleans continue its mastery of the Round Rock Express tonight; the Z’s are 6-2 against Round Rock this season, and have won 18 of the last 27 meetings with their division rivals.
