A pair of first basemen are in the Zephyrs headlines today.
Logan Morrison, who hasn’t played since April 19 when he was involved in a collision with Round Rock’s Matt Kata, underwent an MRI at the Marlins’ spring training facility in Jupiter, Fla., and no structural damage was found. The Marlins expect Morrison to rehab for the next few weeks and for him to return to the Zephyrs by the end of the month. We certainly wish Logan well in his efforts to return home and get back on the field.
A veteran first baseman, Doug Mientkiewicz, was signed by Florida as a free agent and will be at extended spring training to get in some at-bats before joining the Zephyrs. Mientkiewicz, with a longtime reputation as a slick fielder (he won a 2001 Gold Glove with the Minnesota Twins), was released by the Dodgers toward the end of spring training when it became apparent that he would not make the Opening Day roster.
So the Zephyrs, currently without a true first baseman on the roster, will soon be graced with two.
The Zephyrs have dropped six in a row and have lost the last
three games by the combined score of 36-5.
So it has gone bad for the Zephyrs of late.
